The MA in Social Science (Sustainable Development) covers the theories and concepts related to development studies, plus requires the students to carry out extensive field research in order to explore social, cultural and environmental changes taking place as part of the regional integration processes occurring within the SEA region.
The MA focuses on social science approaches by looking at the impacts of and problems created by multi-dimensional development issues ranging from local resource management and local knowledge, transnational migration, displacement and migrants, through to tourism, agrarian transition, health, ethnicity and gender relations, the media and civil movements. Students are also encouraged to attend regular seminars and conferences organized by the program, and to interact with international scholars and experts. The research-based program lays a solid foundation for graduates who wish to become professionals within an educational institution - as lecturers and researchers, or in non-governmental and international organizations and the government sector, or if they wish, to go on and pursue a doctoral degree.
The program is two years (22 months) in duration, and is divided into four semesters. The first semester lasts from August to November and the second from January to May.
